  • FAQ | LibertyLaunchVSO

IMPORTANT INFORMATION Frequently asked questions What should I wear? Layered, casual and comfortable attire appropriate for the season. Soft-soled outdoor, work or casual footwear is strongly encouraged. During peak summer months, we also encouraged hats, sunglasses and sunscreen. If rain should start during your trip, a crew member will host your party in our cabin for the remainder of the charter. For hearty souls, bring a rain jacket or poncho and remain on deck. What is your bad weather and refund policy? We reserve the right to define the existence of, or the chance of inclement weather. If rain, extreme winds, or storms are taking place or are inbound on the day of your trip, we will ask to reschedule you for a mutaully agreed upon day and time. If rescheduling is not possible, we are happy to refund your total cost less a 10% donation that directly funds our social benefit mission of bringing recreational therapy to the greater military community. Any scheduled excursion cancelled with three or more days notice will receive a full refund. Can you accommodate passengers with mobility concerns? Our sailing experince leaves from a floating pier and we have steps to assist in boarding. We can provide assistance boarding, but you must be able to stand and step around low obstacles and be capable of sitting upright in our cockpit, which consists of a padded bench and seat back. We will make every effort to accomodate you or a passenger in your party to mitigate the challenges presented by the physical reality of our vessel. What can I bring? Liberty Launch brings the boat, you bring the party! Bring whatever will make your excursion with us more enjoyable, such as sodas and beer (cans please), or wine (all glass bottles must be handled by crew), food, ice, and music. We do have a few exceptions: no illegal drugs (including marijuna), pets, bannas, and walnuts...(those last two are just superstitions folks!). We have a large ice chest on board and can provide another cooler if needed. My name is Ron, or a member of my party is named Ron, is that a problem? No! We love all our Rons. Watch the movie "Captain Ron" starring Kurt Russel and Martin Short, mention this Q&A, and answer the following for a 10% discount off a single passenger ticket on your next excursion: "are there guerrillas in these woods?" What about parking? Ample, free public parking is available immediately adjacent to our dock. A member of our crew will meet and greet your party near the parking area and escort you to the boat. I have children under the age of 13 in my party. First, we welcome families with members of all ages. To ensure the safety and enjoyment of all, children under the age of 13 must be fitted with the provided USCG approved floatation device. Please let us know how many children, what ages and their approximate weight will be in your party. Children under 13 must be under adult supervision at all times while onboard the vessel. Please visit: for more details.

  • Schooner Principio | LibertyLaunchVSO

In the beginning... ...there was Principio. The word Principio refers to the beginning or "primary" part of something. This is our first vessel, so the name fits. We also found a convenient connection between the steel of our vessel's hull and the nearby Principio Iron Works, founded in 1719. It is a name as solid as the iron the great furnace once produced to sell in London; familiar, rare and indicative of our place at the very head of the Chesapeake Bay and the mouth of the Susquehanna River. Schooner Principio is a Ted Brewer design. If you would like to know more about this pillar of naval architecture, click here . His work includes the well-known schooner Tree of Life and many more. Principio is an example of Mr. Brewer's Cor-Ten model steel hulled schooner, named after the corrosion resistant c or-ten steel. In the early 1990's, Maryland welder and boiler maker William Durkin set out to build this boat after his father decided it would help keep a young man occupied and out of trouble. The result was a Cor-Ten iteration that Ted Brewer and Bill Durkin could both be proud of- fast, simple and tough! The boat is fitted with a full head, galley, large salon and berths for 5-6. She has a spacious cockpit and plenty of room on deck. She is easily sailed with only two crew. This is a very fast design that is much lighter and tender than she appears. Because all of Ted Brewer's Cor-Tens are designed to cross oceans, Principio is dry, stable and comfortable. Sudden storms, for which the Chesapeake Bay is well known, are no problem for Principio; the party continues below while we wait out a squall.

  • Our Service Mission | LibertyLaunchVSO

W e believe business should be a force for good and an agent of change concerned with the welfare of people and the planet. A Sustainable Charity Our founder wanted to build a charter boat company with a difference. The charter services he encountered only offered small discounts or one-off appreciation events to veterans and active duty military members, so he decided to do more. The result is Liberty Launch, a mission-driven, market-sustained benefit company that provides sailing experiences to veterans, active duty military and their families at all times, at no cost, without exception. We offer recreational therapy that combines human interaction, physical activity and the water to ease the impacts of service for those who place defending our c ountry as their primary purpose. We are here for them and their families, not with discounts, but by making them our PRIMARY PURPOSE. Our crew, partners and affiliated organizations share our goals and values. We serve EVERYONE. Liberty Launch will not be able to keep sailing unless our commercial charter revenue shows up. Everyone can come sailing and when they do, everyone wins. The general public is our number one financial backer and financial partner. Come support a vet and their family with some recreational therapy of your own! Mission Driven: Maryland Benefit Corporations Liberty Launch is NOT a nonprofit! It's something new, something more sustainable. Imagine a world in which the self-serving profit motives of the classic corporation have been turned towards social benefit outcomes as well as profit . What would that look like? It would look like Liberty Launch VSO, Benefit Inc. We bet you have never heard of a benefit corporation. That's ok, no one has and Liberty Launch would like to change that. Maryland has had benefit corporation legislation in effect since 2010. Think of a B-Corp as the familiar, for-profit company, but with a registered, public charity mission. B-Corps receive no tax breaks or any other form of incentive to carry out this mission; it's a regular for-profit corporation, but one with a documented, public charity mission. When benefit corporations are established in Maryland, the incorporator must declare on the founding charter exactly what the company's social benefit mission will be. The incorporator must choose from an approved list of activities. That approved legal list of benefit corporation activity is the same list used by those founding 501(c)3 public charities. Benefit corporations share the same DNA as our famous non-profit cousins! But, at Liberty Launch, we use 100% of our corporate profits to carry out our social benefit mission. Liberty Launch is leading by example; turning profit motivation and return on investment to power social benefits for the Greater Military Community and their families. As Liberty Launch grows, we will be able to afford the extra cost of becoming a certified B-Corporation through a non-profit called B-Lab. Benefit corporations that choose to can be certified as meeting additional qualifications and scrutiny above and beyond state law and reporting standards. There is also a significant fee required. Liberty Launch will jump through all of these hoops and fees because we feel that strongly about changing the nature of private corporate culture. -Click below to learn why- All corporations should be B-Corporations! Results for veterans, active duty military members and their families. The core value of Liberty Launch is always being at the ready to serve. We believe that there are many ways to support those who defend our Nation. We are using our greatest strength, sailing, to best effect. We exist to be at the ready to take direct action, providing the services of repose, relief and camaraderie to the men and women who are willing to risk their lives so we can have things like schooners in the first place. We don't pretend to be the best way to assist a vet, but we strive for excellence with the tools we have: camaraderie, wind, water, wood and steel.
